Okay... perhaps at 43 years old I am becoming nostalgic. I was flipping through my Scott U.S. Specialised catalogue, to-day, and was looking at the U.S. commemorative stamps of 1975 to 1995.
A good twenty-year run that includes the American stamps I saw as a young collector, and those I used whilst living in Texas in the mid-1990's. I've been contemplating collecting the U.S. commems, special stamps, etc. of this era. I already do the definiitves (the Americana Series) in detail, and all of the airmail issues... but these are for me, the good old days. The Bicentennial-Era, last of the cool slogan cancels, etc.
Everyone raves about the "classic" stamps. Boring! I like the colourful, modern stamps, especially those of the U.S.
Am I nuts? I think I may need some more shelf space.

Done!
As with everything else I collect, I'll do thid used.
Now... to find a pre-printed album for those years that also have blank pages for the plate blocks, marginal markings, etc., and that is 8 1/2" X 11" so I can run the pages through my computer....
The hunt begins... |

I think the Bicentennial Era issues were among the best the U.S. ever put out, along with all those se-tenant blocks that started at about that time. And those Bicent's actually commemorated something of significance! |

" this used" would be my guess.
Stamps are pretty cool enough years and styles to make most people very happy.
Personally I like the engraved stamps that were around for many years. However I do have a soft spot for the 1-710 stamps. When you get down to it there were some very great color schemes though mostly limited to one color per stamp. |

I, too, find myself drawn to stamps which were current when I first started collecting.
Recent stamps just don't do anything for me. For one thing, I think far too many stamps are issued each year, but understand why---revenue for the gov't. |

A good 25 years ago..i favored the U.S. Scott #327 Louisiana purchase stamp...i bid $17 at a mail auction...a fair amount of money for us at the time and won the stamp..the stamp I won I would say is no more than fine condition..have to watch the mail sales sometimes...i can get the same stamp today for what I paid for it in the 1980's..i still like that stamp !! |

David, I also like the stamps that were new when I started collection around 1984. I really liked the statehood comm's, transportation coils, Ameripex stamps, 50 state birds, 50 wildlife sheet, great american series, etc. I was and am an all around collector of US. Pretty much everything except the Duck stamps, I have 1 that my dad gave me after his hunting license expired for that year (1990 I think) and he signed it. |

Stamperdude:
The Statehood commems are very nice. I especially liked the various commemorative postmarks that were available for each issue.

Just an update... I have decided that I will make my own album pages for these stamps, using blank pages from the U.S. Seal Album, printed by Canadoan Wholesale Supply (CWS), of Paris, Ontario.
I have decided to title this collection: "My America"
I shall keep all of you posted.

Nostalgia and irony... Greeting all :)
Interesting post David! I am turning 43 this Thursday, and brother's name is...David. I began a relatively short lived collecting habit back in...I believe it was 1976 with a gifted (I believe post office issued) book with the cover depicting the iconic three battle worn "Bicentennial Guys" flag, drum, flute. Yes yes, curse me for not knowing my history and who they really are. Along with the book I received a sizable box of canceled envelopes from my mother. These where from love letters my father sent to her when he was away in the service (another story), and other older correspondence, but I remember soaking them all off and, well only partially filling the book, and was pretty much over stamp collecting inside of a year or so...fishing became my thing. Largely I think my interest faded because I had little in way of opportunities at time to obtain new/old stamps to populate my book, and had this pile of (40's-50's) Anyway, I still have it, and all the small original lot packed away and have forgotten about it until reading this post. Currently, I am grappling with a much larger issue of stamps if you read recent post of mine it explains, but interesting to come full-circle. Life is strange.
Maybe I can dig it out and post if you might be interested in it. If it were all the stamps I had in the world, I'd likely hang onto it for my boy, but this is far from the case now, lol. It's perhaps very common, dull book and of little interest, but maybe something...you never know without asking, yes?
Cheers, Fishead |

They have a greater sentimental- rather than financial-value. David |
