Just looking for cheap dated covers in my quest to find some of the unlisted shades and saw this damaged cover for $26, and didn't hesitate for one second before I bought it.

I've already forwarded it to one of the experts on VSC, and he has shown me a few pigeon bloods, and he also thought this has a chance:

No year date on the cover, so no way to prove it's 1861, but the October cancel could work-- the pinks were in Aug/Sept/Oct of '61, and the stamp has a really rich color.

So, I thought I'd post it and see if any of the other color shade guys have any thoughts on this one: Ron? Winston? Love to hear what you think on this one.

Of course, there's always a huge chance that the color isn't the same when the stamp is in hand as on the screen, but this one looks like pigeon blood to me, compared to a couple out on ebay now (especially looks close to the 3rd one, from Wm Langs on cover:

So, I should have it in hand in a couple of days-- wish me well here!
Thanks, Ray

I think it is definitely pink something as the rest of the colors on the cover look good. I also think that you can take any random pink something and match to a stamp that somebody is calling Pigeon Blood, so good luck learning what the infamous Pigeon Blood Pink actually looks like.

The stamp looks a lot like the one I have that was certed 64b.....

Thanks Winston--
I ran this also past Tipzi, and he thought it had a chance. I've got a bunch of 64b's and this one doesn't look like any of them. But I've have horrible color recognition. I can tell by looking at a 3c 1861 that it's not a 65, just by looking, cause I've looked at so many thousands of them. But it's really great when I can run stuff like this one past guys like you and David, especially after reading your posts on VSC on the 1c 1861 thread-- that was really great reading, btw... :), and I would absolutely agree with your viewpoints on that one.

So, I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for chiming in!
Ray

Great find Ray. Even with the questionable "Monitor color" It's definitely Pink from my view. Hope it ends up as Pigeon Blood.

Disappointed as I usually am after seeing an image online, then having in hand. The online image was much brighter than it actually is, with lots of brown toning. It might be 64b, but I doubt that.

Thanks for the responses. Maybe next time....

I am starting to see this more and more with sellers enhancing the colors on the items and I'm starting to lean towards deceptive practice. Sorry to hear Ray.

Ray, I find it hard to believe that this was not intentional. You are in a difficult position I suppose but I think I would try to return it. Did this seller have other 65's for sale to compary to?

I believe that the first picture was intentionally done that way.
The contrast was turned way up.

This is the first I've seen this thread, or I would have told you not to buy it.
The image is obviously (to me) edited.
the brightness of the paper, the "brightness" of the black cancel and the crappiness of the white around the address is a big clue.
