At one point or another we have all come across a stamp that has a hinge mark stain that goes all the way through the stamp to the face. My question is can you remove that stain? If so how? I got a set of 1936 Olympic stamps that were in a lot I bought and they were in there. Stains on the face from the hinge. I would like to save them but don't know how. Any suggestions?

I'm guessing that instead of a hinge mark that bleeds through, you might be looking at (gulp!) a Scotch Tape mark that bleeds through the stamp - sort of dark and oily looking. If so, the quick answer is nope. No way to get rid of that. It's permanent damage as far as I've ever heard.

I have never come across a hinge stain that goes right through to the face of the stamp.

Even as a collector of used stamps only and mostly with hinges when
purchased I can not help you at all. I have had gum from hinges that will not come off and distort the shape of the stamp. This gum will not come off the stamp at all and has no colour to it what so ever.

Here are some examples. These were the worst of the 15 or so that were in the lot. I tried to soak them but it didn't work too well. It did help a little. I don't think it was tape because when I soaked them the antique hinge came off. So I am stumped.

I was given my step-grandfather's collection from his early teen days 1935-1940. He made his own hinges from gummed labels. Some of the stamps have stains that went all the way through.

Here's some of what he used:
