In the 1/2 pound of stamps I bought I have found a R1 First Issue Express Red George Washington stamp. it is the oldest stamp I now own. The problem is how do you tell the different between OLD PAPER and SILK PAPER? It is perforated. It is soaking now so I can post a photograph yet.

I assume that your stamp as a pen cancel, What is that date of the cancel? The old paper varies from med to very thick Earlier papers can be very brittle at times. If your stamp is cancelled before Aug 1870, then there is little chance it is printed on the experimental silk paper.

The silk paper has silk fibres that can easily be seen.

Often the fibers are red or blue and about 1-3 millimeters long. On some stamps you can find only one or two fibers. Other stamps have many fibers.
