Luxemburg Roman Archeology Mosaic Art Writer Poet Music

Grand Duchy of Luxembourg 2007 souvenir (miniature) odd-shaped-stamps sheet showing an unearthed (in 1995) Roman-era mosaic on the floor of a foyer in an old Roman villa (circa 240 AD) now in the town of Vichten, Luxembourg.

Shows the classical Greek poet Homer and the Muse Calliope (Greek Mythology, Muse of epic elegiac poetry) in the center octagonal niche with the other eight muses surrounding them in their own octagonal (8-sided) niches.



Actual mosaic size is 10.36 metres x 5.92 metres (approximately 14 feet x 9-1/2 feet). This includes the end borders on two sides, seen in an actual photo below. So the part shown on the stamp sheet is only 5.92 meters or 9-1/2 feet square. Almost 1800 years old. That's not year of 1800, that's eighteen hundred years. Amazing discovery.

Note: the black stains seen scattered over the sheet are on the original mosaic from being in the ground for so long.

Two interesting details are the alternating corner designs.

They both look like they have eyes looking out at you (to me anyway, best check my meds I suppose ), perhaps flowers (lilies?, and scrolls?, the personification of flowery writing and the scrolls alive with Homer's writing themselves?
