Hi, i'm in a situation and would like some advice. My wifes grandfather recently passed away in Russia. She went to collect his things from his home in Russia and discovered he had an extensive Russian Stamp Collection. She brought about 50 lbs of stamps back all in pretty good condition. Some of them date back as far as the mid 1800s. There are about 1000ish stamps per year for each year since 1923.
Neither of us know a thing about stamps. I turned to a friend for advice on how to sell them and he suggested going to the library and renting "scotts book" and list them on e-bay. I wasn't sure e-bay was a good idea.
Can anyone offer any advice, or perhaps point me to someone to appraise them? We're really not sure what to do with these 10000's of stamps. Thanks!
Stamprookie..the most economical way to go would be to try and locate a stamp club near where you live...the folks at the stamp club will give you a fair idea of what you have..at zero cost to you...if you ask a dealers advice..you better get at least a second opinion..its a shame people do not leave information for their heirs as to what the collection might be worth !!
I think getting a Scotts catalogue would only be overwhelming for you. Someone with experience can let you know by looking at their condition what they possibly would be worth-remember that mint versus used, missing perfs, stains, wear and tears, creases, and centering play a great importance in valuing your stamps. I think Phil hit the nail on the head by saying find a stamp club in your area--anyone else would charge you. Good luck to you and your wife!
