Not Bad For 110 Clams...

I was just settling down to get some housework done this morning, and the phone rings. It's my local stamp dealer, who tells me "I just put out some of those stockbook lots you really like... but be prepared, they're messy!"

Messy stockbook lots? Sure, I'm in.

Boy, when he said "messy" he wasn't kidding. At some point along the way, someone either shook these stockbooks, or made the dain-bramaged move of putting them on the shelf upside down (not good).

Still, it was 5 stockbooks of (mostly) classic era materal, tens of thousands of stamps, for $110. How could I say no? While nothing jumped out as being worth megabucks (but who could tell?), there will be plenty of fun hunting for watermark and perf varieties, not to mention SON cancels, which is my real reason for accumulating these type of lots.

The makeup was:

A small stockbook of Denmark
A small stockbook of Great Britain
A small stockbook of Ireland
A large stockbook of Denmark
A large stockbook of Netherlands

I didn't photograph all the pages, but the pics below will give you an idea of the incredible mess. This will provide many MANY hours of eye-straining fun at some point in the future.

What a beautiful mess that is. I need a us or Germany one. Looks like lots of fun filled hours for sure.

Revenuecollector, congratulations on your latest acquisition. While the contents of the stockbooks are "messy", I'm sure that you got your money's worth of stamps and many, many happy hours of sorting.

I appreciate the sentiment, but at this point the material is not for sale, at least not until I've had a chance to go through and look for cancels I want. Not sure how soon that will be.

For the most part, I try to NOT to post pictures of new acquisitions that are obtained just to flip, as introducing them outside of the sale forums could be viewed as poor form or trying to circumvent the forum rules.

Nice lot. Those will be a lot of fun to sift through.

If you don't mind me asking, how do you divide a collection like this into lots for sale? Random mixes, complete sets, singles, duplicate sets? I'd love to buy a lot like this but I'm afraid I'd be stuck with it.

That's just it: for the most part I haven't. Given the contraction of local brick & mortar stamp shops (at one point there were three, now there's only one and the proprietor is now 70), I have been buying these lots up and salting them away for when I retire in 20 years. I figure that by then there will be no local source of new material... so I might as well get while the getting is good.

The few lots I have sold, I've gone through and cherrypicked the cancels/varieties I want to keep, and then sold the rest intact, rather than trying to break the lot up into sets or singles. While that ultimately will not result in the highest return, from a labor perspective that is by far the easiest.

It`s very nice! 4 Danish West Indies spotted, but I guess with a little luck the 1875 Danish lot alone could easily bring your money back. Denmark Christmas Seals,BOB, it seems a very good Denmark selection!

Revenuecollector, that group is kind of messy!, but I LOVE IT. Wish I had something like that to while away the time. Still trying to figure out how to buy those two books of stamp blocks.
