Hurricane Andrew went right over my daughter's house - across from the main gate of Homestead Air Force Base. The radar image below was the last scan of the Hurricane Warning Center radar before the storm destroyed it. The green arrow points to Linda's house.
She and her husband stayed North of the storm on the night of 23 August. She phoned me in the morning and I asked her to write messages when she had a chance and mail them - her husband works at the post office. There was no other communication South of Kendall for days.
So, she wrote a series of letters on the outside of envelopes and Stan took them to the Post office with him every morning. There was no mail out of Homestead for four days. As far as I know these were the first, an perhaps only letters, that left on the 29th. This letter is dated 24 Aug and postmarked 29 Aug. The Miami transit mark is 31 Aug.

These covers will go to my great grand daughter.
