Yes you read the topic correctly. It appears there is no means some people will go through for money. But watermarks are sometimes created to both hide a thin or increase the value of a stamp.
Interesting this is not all that hard to do. The fake watermark is made by scraping away some of the paper in the shape of the watermark.
However you can tell the difference between a real and a fake watermark. The first step is knowing where the watermark can be and can not be on the stamp is an important step. The other way is that this fake watermark will whiten out after drying from it's dip into the watermark fluid.
Even a mint stamp can be given a fake watermark and regummed. However the same tell tell sign will appear.
