I found another interesting 3c washington. According to the Scott catalog, the earliest documented use is dated November 16th, 1917.
It's positively a type I done with a rotary printing. I have looked multiple times and the only thing that sticks out under water mark fluid would be the crease running diagonally through the stamp.

Any thoughts????

What Scott catalog are you using? My 2011 Scott Specialized shows the EKU of Scott #493 to be 11/02/1917, even though the stamp was actually issued on 07/23/1917. So it is quite possible that you have an earlier use of that stamp that just hasn't reached the Scott publishers for confirmation.

Well...yes...but that's what EKUs are all about -- vigilant collectors keep pushing that date back, and enjoy a few moments of fame for their efforts. I'd send Linn's a good color photocopy, to be passed along to Amos Press, publishers of the Scott Catalogs.

Every pre-1930 cover that passes through my hands gets the eagle eye for dates, markings, rare cancels, etc.

I am using the 2010 Scott specialized cat.
I'll take your advise and pass a picture on to linn's as soon as I get it verified.

I guess someone else found an earlier cancel from 2010 to update the 2011 cat.

The date for the 2010 Scott is November; yours is August; there's nothing to verify? Go for it.

Cancel could be fake this is one explanation.
What does Michel say?

Quote:
Michel is more detailedthan Scott, with quantities issued, sheet formats, and so forth. Also of significance to some collectors is its coverage of countries and periods omitted by Scott for editorial or political reasons. For instance, US embargoes against Cuba, Iraq, and North Korea are reflected by Scott's failure to show market values for those countries' stamp issues (as late as 2002, Scott did not supply any information at all about North Korean stamps), and Michel is one of few sources for that information
.

It's not a fake cancel, and Michel has nothing to do with it. The only question is whether the stamp is identified correctly, and I have no opinion about that.

The original poster's explanation seems adequate.

I am not so good at the English.
I was just trying to offer different perspective.
