1851 is an odd date to put on a stamp that wasn't issued until 10 years later... Then they put 1872 on it as well. Even more puzzling is the symbol in between the C and the W. Not a clue. Perhaps Hebrew or some other middle east language?

The monogram looks like

C
D L

to me.

Or

C
D V L

. . . perhaps the 1851 at top and 1872 at bottom have something to do with the former owner and new owner? is this a stamp used on deeds?

Would a legal firm have done this marking?

perhaps the monogram is the firm's initials and the W below the clerk who handled the transaction (or something)?

My guess is Roman/Latin numerals of some sort.

The backwards C was used for 500. A roman numeral with a line/dash over the top indicates THOUSANDS.

Unfortunately, Roman Numerals are far from "standardized" in their usage.

I would believe that the year 1851 was when that firm was founded & 1872 was the year of use.

The middle character might be a stylized "M"

I just bid on a similar stamp. Normally I bid on the hand stamped varieties but I thought the one I bid on had an interesting manuscript cancel. I read this and had to double check to make sure we were not bidding against each other. Mine is different and no one, including you has outbid me yet.

My money is on KirkS. I think he is right about the backwards c with the line above. The last part of the center is still a mystery to me, and what it all means together is a bigger mystery. This is by the way, a great example of what I love about this forum.

It could also be the birth and death dates of someone and this was on a will even though proprietary stamps were only supposed to be used on proprietary articles and playing cards. Short of finding another example on a document we will never know.
