I'm not upset, just having a little fun with the whole offset, setoo, upset and setup. But one big factor is evident and that is that there is not only differences in terms from one county to another but also within one country or even one publication. The term that I have always used of this condition is backside offset transfer (but my engineering background has always made me slightly over descriptive).

backside offset

See, I'm not the only one to add a word (or two) to terminology. Finally, someone who is more verbose than I!

May I inquire why it also upset you ?

Because the offset/setoff/set-off/(backside offset)/(backside offset transfer)/(do-hickey on the back) on that 4c Washington is of a different shade from the front! Can you imagine what this will do to the already lengthy minor variety listings in the Scott US Specialized?!

I had fully intended to use the United States Stamp Society's A Glossary of Terms for the Collector of United States Stamps to support those who argued for offset as the proper term. Imagine my surprise when I read the following:

Quote:
Set-off - 1) the result of ink from a newly printed sheet leaving an impression on the back of the sheet stacked on top of it; 2) the result of ink accidentally applied to the roller of a printing press being picked up by the next sheet to be printed. These freaks are sometimes misleadingly called offsets. See also Phantom Numbers.

I never would have dreamed that what I thought was a simple question would have sparked such a spirited discussion.

As far as I'm concerned, all 25 terms are correct (I'm leaving unassigned numbers for future terms -- I've always wanted to be a catalog editor).

Lesson to be learned. A picture is worth at least 1000 words (if not half a dozen terms).
