Here I am posting again! Going through my father's stamps, I am impressed at the extent of some of his "back of the book" collections. I really love the design of the 1875-1899 design, but man, I am having a tough time attributing a lot of them. Many of the higher value examples have the Scott PR # written on the back at some point.

Any tips in segragating these varieties? The hardest for me is that first black page with the low denom black's and reds. I tried to catogorize them, but I am not too confident. I know he has a decent assortment of the 1895.

Also, what would one value the proof collection on the cards?
Where does the 1899 collection fit in? Is it just valued like the 1895-1897 series?

Huge difference in price between the 1895 and the 1895-97 series, so I need to know how to retrieve the watermark?

The 3rd black page with only 4 stamps are al from the 1895 series, including PR108 OG hinged. PR112 used and PR113 mint no gum. I am thinking at least those 3, and some of the ones with face value of 24c-96c....should be certified.

thoughts? thanks for your input...Johnny

There are many counterfeits and reprints of all of these issues. Sometimes it is on the stamp and sometimes not. Sometimes when it is on the stamp it has been removed. PR1-6 (the first page) have been extensively counterfeited. At the bottom of those stamps is a label that says The National Bank Note Company New York; if those words are not very sharp and clear then the stamp is a counterfeit for certain. If they are sharp and clear it might still be a fake and would have to be certified by an expert. Genuinely used examples of newspaper stamps are also pretty scarce and would need a cert for any of the more expensive ones, which is most of them. A very difficult area that relatively few are really knowledgeable about. What little I know has been picked up by listening to people who know far more.
