Hello everyone, this is my first post and I am really new at this stamp stuff here,,digging into my late grandfathers collection finally and did a few days reasearch on stamps to get some basics so to say under my hat..so here we go,please let me know if I am doing ok..My gradfather left me 14 Scott albums,,with alot of what appears to me,very very nice stamps,,alot of 1800 and early 1900 as well, from all countries..all we kept in the albums and I can certainly say he knew what he was doing..alot of stamps are in a plastic sleeve, never stamped and look brand new or mint perhaps.. Here is one I decided to scan for my first stamp ever scanned..I did some research on this stamp and its being sold for somewhere around $90.00..I know thats mint never hidged,,but how does this stamp appear to you folks? Is it as nice as I think she is or what? And I have one more quick question if you dont mind, see that stamp on it with date,,I read that if the stamp and date are nice that this certainly can raise the value of the stamp..Well thats all I have fro now to ask,,I await your replys and I will then proceed through my album to show you all more..what I really would like to know is the value,is this worth getting certified or whatever for a auction in the future or not? Thank you all so very much for your help.. Dave PS I have a Scott 978 Gettysburg Address I want to show you next, its in a small plastic sleeve, never stamped and looks mint or maybe uncirculated even..this I really want to know what you guys think about as well so I will scan this next and post later after hearing back from a few of you

Those inflated prices for graded stamps have been discussed here before, I will let the U.S. experts answer this. Welcome to the forum! |

Good job with your first scan. Next time, "crop" the image tighter to the stamp and it will appear larger.

Quote: How come they are selling it for $95.00,,is it becuase it is certified and registered perhaps? Exactly. The stamp is way overpriced (almost insanely priced in some people's estimation). These sort of listings try and get stamp collectors excited about the stamp condition being rated "superb", which on most common US stamps is not worth the value of the certification. The stamp is only worth about 20 or 25 cents (catalog value) and since more than 132 million stamps were printed, there's hardly a market for such a premium cost for that stamp in its stated condition. Here's another listing. You can get an entire pane of 50 of that same stamp for only $5.75, which comes out to less than 12 cents a stamp (and most collectors would even suggest that is overpriced): http://www.stamphead.com/auction/US...tion_detailsAs a general rule, virtually all US commemorative stamps from 1940 forward have a minimum catalog value of 20 or 25 cents; only the true scarce/rare examples with printing or perforation flaws command such a premium. |

These stamps have a real value of 3 cents each as postage. To put it into perspective, the catalog value for a mint single in 2011 was the minimum value at the time, 20 cents. A plate block, even though it was four stamps only cataloged 45 cents. It only went up to 25 cents because Scott raised the minimum catalog value. The last time I checked a month or so back stamp dealers were paying about 60% of FACE value for mint stamps such as this one. Used stamps like this get figured for zero in any large lot. If someone wants to buy one they will charge 25 cents because it does not pay for them otherwise. Paying more than that for this stamp mint or used is the equivalent of someone selling you the Brooklyn Bridge. |

Here is a tip about scanning. Do not use your entire scanner glass (usually 8 x 11 inches) as your scanning area, and then crop away many inches of "excess space."
For a single stamp, put the stamp down in the corner of the scanner glass and set the scanning area slightly larger than the stamp (say 2 x 3 inches). You get a much better result, and it is not likely to need to be adjusted to meet our 100kb maximum.
In other words, avoid scanning any stamp or cover with more than one inch of "excess space" on each side, less if possible. |

Thank you all so very much for all of your help and information..big difference in price thats for sure..I wonder why still they are asking $95.00 for that stamp like that..its just so far off there has to be something there to justify that...are you sure certification and professional grading isnt the main factor in the price of $95.00 SMAUGGIE~ can I ask you or anyone else who knows, what these initials stand for?? Nice CDS sorta SON. Sounds like I will now have to narrow my searches in the stamp books for stamps before 1940 only in hopes of finding the diamond in the ruff so to say! |

Welcome to Stamp Community Forum, UFOAIRMAIL! That's a very nice used example of the Iowa statehood centennial stamp -- the postmark is clean and clear, showing a late usage 15 years after the stamp was issued. Regarding why the graded mint stamp was being sold so high, 2 reasons: 1) the graded stamp craze (don't fall for it on the common stuff such as this) 2) the seller (I will not repost the name, but if you are familiar with them, then enough said). k |

Welcome to the forum UFO I wonder if there is any way of contacting the seller to let him know I would be more than willing to sell him some extras of this stamp for $75.00 cheap? <G> Leave him / her room for a profit of course. As stated previously, this stamp is quite common mint or used and you are luck to get 5 and 10 cents apiece. Chimo Bujutsu |
