is there any sort of a color chart that one could scan
along side of the actual stamps to determine color?
or other stamps that only come in one shade variation?

there are color charts that are specific for this series of stamps.
I happen to own one. They are not cheap.

The guide I have is called
A Color Guide and printing history of the US 2-cent red triangle stamps series of 1894, 1895 and 1898 Types 1,2,3,3a, and 4

It has authentic color chips that exactly match the stamp inks that were used, plus all the tools to identify the stamps.
It has a $16.00 price tag.
It came from
Kenneth E. Diehl
P.O. Box 4275
ScottsDale AZ.

you should read this article and links.. http://www.stampsmarter.com/1847usa...ype3Vs4.html

I don't think it is published anymore. But there is one available here for $25.00 http://www.philbansner.com/philatel...-1st-Bur.htm

I also wanted to say that "online" color guides are not reliable simply because every one's monitor is calibrated differently. I have 3 monitors and the same color is different on all 3, they are different brands and show colors differently. So, looking for an online color guide to tell if something is Carmine or Reddish Carmine is impossible.

builderr,

I have the exact same color ID catalog Stampvirgin is talking about, and yes it absurdly priced @ $30-$50. If your going to invest the time and money for this, Scan both the color chart palette and the stamp. Just as Stampvirgin mentioned, every one's PC monitors are going to display a different shade resulting any many different opinions, You can crop areas of the stamp to compare side by side to the color chart resulting in a more accurately identified color. You could then post them both here and everyone would at least have an easier way to confirm your color ID is accurate, The more opinions you can get, "yes, your right on! or, not even close" You'll be confident in your observation. Just a good way to double check your opinion and really just insures you are being honest with yourself. I don't know how many time I have came across a rare color shade and start talking myself into believing I'm correct about it.

Ummm, why is this thread in the BST forum?

I looked at specialty color plates before I made a purchase decision. I realized then that half the stamps on each color plate looked exactly the same to me. I don't collect minor color shades, but not by choice.

For those of you who can see the minute differences...
