I bought the following stamp knowing of the paper/glue on the back. (first two images) Accidently, I dropped my tongs and the tip hit the chunk of glue and it shattered. Hmmm.... I think I'll try to soak it for awhile. After about 7 minutes, the glue was soft enough to dab off. I soaked a couple more minutes and it came almost clean! (last two images). I'm very happy with the result, of course.

Old U.S. stamps are generally not harmed by soaking in warm water; another ten minutes and all traces of that old horsehide glue should disappear.

Why is it "best" if it is damaged? Or was that a typo? And if it is damaged, where? Is it the perfs?

I bet raywrio meant to say not damaged. I always soak old classics like these when they have clumped up glue.

Maybe a small hydrogen peroxide dip, a good rinse and a pressing would resurrect it a bit more?

Here is same stamp after soaking in hydrogen peroxide for a few minutes, then a water rinse. A little better, I think. Thanks, I Love Stamps. By the way, what's the best way to press a stamp?

... and, the black spec on the back of the stamp is a hitchhiker from my scanner. I flicked it right off, the little bugger.

One of the best features, as yet unmentioned, is the red cancel...

But I'm having trouble figuring out what cancel might end in "...GT."

I thought it was OCT. but the O doesn't fit in.

At the top I can make out ITY; I think that might be the end of CITY?

Could this have been cancelled twice?

I use a old fashioned stamp press to press stamps.

basically use a large wood or metal clamp with drying paper inside...

Take a look at this rotated version of the image with most of the stamp electronically removed. I read it to be "PAID 1 CT" at the bottom:
