I have a Scott #265 (or at least it is supposed to be, according to the seller) and when I put watermark fluid (Clarity from Mystic) a spot turns dark purple. When it dries it goes away. When the stamp is dry or wet with plain water that same area looks like a thin. Any thoughts on this?
Finally got a chance to scan this. This is stamp as it looks dry. I can't get a scan with watermark fluid on it; evaporates too quickly. The area that turns purple starts at the upper lip and goes to the left (as you look at the face of the stamp).
I would guess the purplish spot is caused by the thin.
Drop some watermark fluid over the stamp face down, but this time don't put it in dark watermark tray. Just put it over some non-black surface and see if it is still "purplish".
While it's hard to confirm without seeing out in hand it would appear to be some sort of damage to G.W.'s lips like maybe a pin hole. Also, on the back it appears to either be a partial hinge, maybe a thin, or possible repair made with paper that had either sizing or chemical whiteners on it (eg: not stamp paper or newer stamp paper).
Using a white background with watermark fluid it shows up as NOT purple. You were right, khj, the black tray made the red appear purple. Live and learn. Thanks, folks.
The thing I'm most disappointed about is that it lacks a watermark, or at least I can't find one. I don't think this is a 265. Third time this has happened to me.
