I have a question. I have a stamp (Scott#650) with an old C.D.S. (that is a S.O.T.N.) that actually has the letters D.P.O. on the bottom of the dial? Now I know that the abbreviated stamp collectors "slang" or acronym for Discontinued Post Office or Decommissioned Post Office but what do the letters D.P.O. on a C.D.S. mean? If a P.O. is decommissioned it certainly cannot be canceling letters? I realize that I posted my image before but I either can't remember or I never knew to begin with what it stands for? Do you know? Thank you very much.

I think it's "Downtown Post Office".

It could also stand for "Depot Post Office".

Cleveland used several versions of that postmark through the years and into the 1940s. Here are a couple of examples I found on the internet:

I'm not. I've looked at this very hard and believe it does read CLEVELAND OHIO D.P.O. Jul'2 3:30PM

Here is the cropped image of the dial and I tried to "enhance" the black ink so you can see what I'm seeing. I just don't think it is an "R" but rather a "D".

wt1 do you know of other D.P.O. cancels?

I think you nailed it down wt1. I thought it was Railway related. You posted that while I was constructing that post. I'm comfortable with "Depot Post Office". Thank you once again!

JamesW. gave that stamp to me.

A railroad station is sometimes called a "depot", or a railroad depot. If the station has a post office that would be a depot post office or DPO.

Fast forward to the present day and the US Postal Service has come up with a new meaning for the word DPO, as in Diplomatic Post Office, for which there are some special postmarks, too.

I have several DPO postmarks. I figured the same, it was a depot post office. Not wanting to stretch my brain further I just placed them with the others for that Scott number.
