i always have a problem identifying stamp colors. could the stamp on the right be a rose carmine? it has full gum and never hinged. i appreciate any help
It could be, just looking at the scan, but as Tom points out scanners and monitors can show colors differently. One thing that can help is to find a stamp -- any stamp -- that Scott describes as rose carmine and compare your stamp to that. The one on the left appears to be the same color but more heavily inked.
For this stamp it is not the color you are looking to use to identify the stamp. It does appear to be a TYPE II, the horizontal lines cross the triangle but are thinner inside the triangle. That would make the stamp #251. Now the TYPE II can come in either carmine or scarlet for those that like to refine it a little more.
Since there can be a price difference depending on the market and buyer you would need a color gauge or a know stamp with the carmine or scarlet color to get an exact match. The 251 can be shown as either the 251 or the 251a.
Now to refine it one more time you will need to check the water mark. If it has a double line watermark regardless of color it is Carmine making the stamp #266.
