I lived in a big white house on the corner of Garland Street and Broadway. My parents owned and operated Lufkin's candy shop near the old City Hall. From what I see in the Bangor Daily News not much is left of old Bangor.
Hey Jerry what a riot, my house is a about half mile from there. I am sure you would not recognize the town now. I have never heard of your parents store but I am sure many old timers around here remember it. There is a Facebook group "You knew you group in Bangor Me when.." It has 1900 members and people dig out all kinds of old pictures and talk about Bangor of long ago. Its kind of cool I am sure they would let you in. You might connect with someone you knew around here then.
Hope all goes well. I lost about 1/3 of my stamp collection in Hurricane Katrina in Gulfport, MS in 2005. My house was on 10foot stilts on the Biloxi River (7 miles by water to the bay) and I got waist deep water in the house.... Lost everything! Mold was even on the back of the hanging pictures. Also lost about $40K worth of tools. But we are fine now. It is great how humans can forget tough things happening to them. But everything in replaceable...We doing doing well now. We retired recently and live in Mobile, Alabama. Of course we have water in the back yard. We can take a boat from our back yard to Mobile Bay.
Glad to hear everyone got through ok. I'm on the south shore of LI, and although Baldwin didnt get hit that hard, the same can't be said for the neighboring towns. Just glad that all I had was power outage. Now to deal with this Nor'easter.
You guys belong to any local clubs on LI, or anywhere in NYC? I just got back in the hobby and it would be nice to meet with people in person as well as online.
Not intending to make a philatelic event out of a natural disaster such as Hurricane Sandy, but has anyone thought to retain any covers postmarked during Hurricane Sandy from virtually any cities or towns from the NY/NJ/CT areas?
While they may not be "valuable", they certainly will make for an interesting conversation piece. Further, with all of the closed/temporary locations of post offices and power disruptions that caused mail to be redirected to other postal facilities, I suspect there will be a fair amount of special markings and/or damaged mail that might be of interest as they eventually make it to their intended destination.
