Hi there stamp community,

My name is Jeremy, and I'm a 20-year-old college student from NJ (although I spend most of my time up at school in New Hampshire). I study English and Film at school, and I love it up North because of the awesomely cold winters. I'm actually a ski patroller up in NH, which is great--getting outside and enjoying the weather is the only way to enjoy the northeast.

My Grandfather passed away a few years ago, but it has only been recently that my grandma is moving out of their old house in Virginia and into a smaller, more manageable place. As we were helping her move, we came across an old stamp collection—my grandma wasn't exactly sure whom it belonged to (I think maybe my uncle, but it's most likely just my grandpa). Anyway, she gave it to me.

So at this point, I'm not sure what to do. Unfortunately, I've never been much of a collector of anything—if I ever have extra money in college (rare) I like to spend it real meals out or, during the winter, lift tickets at other mountains. I think my grandpa would understand; although, being that he's from the South (If you consider Virginia to be South), he might not get the skiing part.

I've been searching the Internet over the past few days, reading various stamp message boards and looking at various websites, and I have to say, this community seems to be the most friendly and opening to beginners and experts alike. That said—does anybody have some advice on my next step? I don't think I want to just sell the collection to some large appraiser in Boston or New York…but I guess I just really don't know.

So thanks to everyone here and I hope I learn a whole bunch about this hobby during my time here!

I would consider Virginia the South..Richmond the Confederate Capitol, the Confederate shipyards around Norfolk, the army of Northern Virginia..glad you like the NorthEast..nice scenery but I could do without the oil bills in winter...welcome to the forum !

to the SCF Jeremy!

It would help if we had scans of some of the material, or at least a description. Is it a U.S. collection, worldwide, topical, etc.? Are there Scott # identifiers associated with the stamps? Are they mint (unused) or used? Are they singles or multiples?

Someone will be glad to get you started.

Hi Jeremy,

Welcome to the SCF.

Unfortunatelty there is no quick way to price up your collection.
The first step would be to go to your library and borrow a Scott's stamp catalog. If you find any that might be worth something, post the pic on this forum and you will receive more info on it.

Hi Jeremy,
Alot of great people here willing to help out new collectors. I would go with triggersmob suggestion and browse a Scott catalog to give you a idea of what you have. Also, if you have the time scan away and post to the forums as many will help to identify for you.

Hi everyone, thanks for the responses!

I'll definitely have to go to the library and check that out--the collection seems to be quite wide, spanning a number of different countries. The stamps are all in an old collector's book.

I made a flickr with pictures of the (stamps on the) pages, the address is http://flickr.com/photos/31811437@N04/

Thanks again to everyone who has read this thread!

I think the next step I'm looking to take is to sell the collection...but I'm not sure the best way to go about this.

Why don't you tell us what kind of a collection it is, then post some specific pictures of what you want to sell.
