A couple of questions about the ASCC tha hopefully someone that owns one can answer.

1. Does the ASCC list as early as 1800 ?
2. Does it give values for early 1800's postmarks ?
3. Is it divided by the States ? or Years ?

I was rummaging through some old family documents and found a stash of around 40 - 50 Stampless entires going back to 1800, so I'm thinking of picking up an ASCC but want to be sure it is what I'm looking for.

1) yes
2) yes
3) states / territories

Now the caveats. It is a very dated catalog, with a major rewrite in progress, though still a few years out. The values must be taken with a big grain of salt, and may at best provide a relative index to actual market value. It does contain much other useful information however, such as rates. As always, the market is the final arbiter of value, with condition being a major factor.

Hope that helps.
Mike

Thanks Mike. I know the book was written in the 1960's with updates so as far as value all I need to know is what's scarce / valuable and what is common. I won't be selling any of them as they're all old family letters and these will help with a fellow Family members genealogy project.

The current (Fifth) edition of Vol I of the ASCC was published in 1997, and you should be able to pick up used copies quite reasonably.

Or get a copy through the Inter-Library Loan service; in Ohio, it's free. You may have to pay postage, depending. Specify the 1997, of course.
