I found this type U93 stamped envelope and it seems to have a color error. The color looks to be a very light purple, but is so light it almost looks light blackish in certain light. Does it also have a printing error? Printing is light with it being very thin on the upper left side.

That is a very nice find. The Scott Specialized doesn't list anything like this. The issue is the color that is actually on the impression. The color should be carmine. There is a listing for an error of color which is green. If what you have is different from either then you should send it in and have an opinion on it. Partial transfer of carmine probably wouldn't bring much. Collectors would consider it an oddity. A different color altogether then, you really have something. |

Actually these are very desirable by the postal stationery collectors. I believe this is the result of two envelopes going through the press at the same time. Only the top envelope got both the ink and embossing and the bottom one got the embossing only. There are quite a few Postal stationery collectors on here that I positive will shed more light on these. I actually believe they do carry a premium also. Nice find too by the way! Congrats. |

If two envelopes went through at the same time, wouldn't it only be embossed and not have any color? This definitely has color to it. Any recommendations on where to send it to have it looked at? |

It's not an albino if it has color. No matter how little it does have. You can send it any of the expertizing firms. APS, PF, PSE, PSAG, or Weiss. Weiss turns around the opinions the fastest. It cost $25.. each item. You can buy one on ebay at a discount. |

I sent a pic to Mr. Weiss and he thinks it's an albino. I sent him back an email asking why it has color in the stamp and his reply was that he has never seen any other colors than green listed as an error. I don't think I'm going to give up on this one yet. |

You have run into one of the conumdrums of collecting. If it isn't one of the reported errors, experts are wary of chemical manipulation of an item. Sending a scan won't get you anywhere. Scans can be altered even more easily. You need to send it in to have them perform professional testing and inspection. You also need to be prepared for bad news. There might be an answer that has negative impact on the cover. |

Does anyone know the process that is used to print the envelopes? Does the post office print the postage on the envelopes and then sell them to businesses who then print their own messages? Or does the post office print the envelope for for a business at the same time the postage is printed? |

Private printer under contract to the post office prints the stamp and forms the envelope. Return requests may be applied by that same printer or privately after purchase of the envelope. The envelope shown is a business reply envelope. The business had a private printer print the address on the already stamped and formed envelopes. The picture is not good enough to render an opinion on the color. The circular die envelopes were in production from 1915 to 1950. Errors of value, usually misnamed errors of color, are known. The current circular die specialist is a member of the APEX examination committee. |
