Just received this mixed up guy in mail. First one I have ever seen. After buying it, I read these were the subject of forgeries. I would not have a clue what to look for. If anyone has any tips or can tell anything by my scan please comment. Any help appreciated. I think my next step is to send this in to PSE for certification. Unless there is something evidently amiss and then it goes back where it came from. I am hoping I have the real Mc Coy here. I think it is a great old stamp. The price seemed about right based on the few comparable sales I could find. As I said, any comments welcome thanks

Nothing looks obviously amiss other than perhaps the manuscript cancel has been lightened. Left-right centering is good; top-bottom centering is relatively poor, as is frequently the case with these. The price paid is about average for the piece... not a fantastic deal, but not overpaid either.

(All IMO of course.)

Thanks Revenuecollector that is good to know, I guess the next stop for George is the powers that be. I thought I paid about middle of road, certainly no discount, but that was the only way I was going to get my hands on this guy. I hate losing auctions for things I really want. I really wanted this stamp, I love old Revenue. But I was at the top of my price limit, another 20 bucks somebody else would have it. I am happy the way it worked out, pending of course a clean bill of health for the upside down father of our country. First stamp I ever submitted for certification. Looks like it costs 25 to 50 bucks depending on what they find out. I think its money well spent. Someday I may give this stamp to my three year old Daughter. She would have a unique stamp to start a collection right off the bat. I don't want her saying her Daddy gave her a bogus stamp.

Don't show it to her yet -- she may take the scissors and "help" make Washington right side up.

I'm told when I was 3, I helped by cutting the "rough edges" off some of my mom's stamps. Thankfully, I don't remember.

These were never faked, as inverts go they are relatively common. The second issue inverts were faked, and some are very dangerous until you come to recognize them.
The PF is better at revenues than PSE though (for the record, I am one of the people who expertize revenues at the PF).

This is NOT a stamp to give to a young collector. Put it away safely and wait until she is old enough to understand what it is and knows how to handle stamps correctly.

Thanks I will take a look at sending it in to the PF instead. And no need to worry my girl won't get more than her eyes on it until I know she knows how to handle it. I don't think it would be scissors, she would most likely just lick it and try to stick it to something. I'd come home from work someday and it would be stuck to the refrigerator. Besides she only collects Duck stamps now and those are in album.
