I am new member in the UK. collecting all world postally used and especially legible postmarks.

As an overseas member, no doubt one of many, can I make a plea re. Catalogue numbers. We do not all use Scott ( or even have access to it ).Can I ask that in addition to the the sc. no. everyone gives a brief description of the stamp so that those of us using other catalogues know to what you refer? Probably most of you do so already - but there is a potential problem in that some members of the host country of discussion boards ( in general) sometimes forget that some of the members/readers come from elsewhere on the planet. Sometimes "us darned foreigners" do know something about the matters of the country involved and are itching to "show off" our knowledge !

Welcome Malcolm. We're glad to have you here.

I think you'll find that a lot of us use catalog numbers based on the issuing country.

If we're talking about USA Stamps, it's always going to be Scott Numbers. For the Commonwealth, it will probably be Stanley Gibbons numbers. Most of the Canadian collectors use the Unitrade Catalogue, but Unitrade adopted Scott, not SG, so we'll have to blame that on Unitrade.

Hi Malcom and welcome to the group!

Thanks for your input. I, for one am guilty of doing what you are talking about.
I'm in the USA and only have Scott catalogs so that is the catalog number I list when I'm talking about a particular stamp. I usually don't have a lot of time to spend on the computer or with my stamps and it would just take me a lot longer to look up the stamp in the scott catalog then type out the year of issue, denomination, and description. However, I always figured that if someone that did not have access to Scott catalogs was interested in something I posted that included a Scott #, all they'd have to do was ask, and in that case I would be happy to provide the additional info so they could look up the stamp in whatever catalog they were using. But after having said all that, maybe I should think about it some more and change my ways to go ahead and add the additional info anyway. I suppose it would be nice if all (many)of the stamp catalog companies got together and agreed to make up some kind of cross reference for the hobby. Or at least give permission for a cross reference to be made. I kinda doubt they would though - they'd probably think it may hurt the sales of their catalogs.

Welcome again!
Kind Regards,

Dave N.
