I think there are quite a few books that specialize in the Washington / Franklin issues. I am looking to find one. Can anybody recommend one that is a good one, for I am looking into getting one. (Or will I need more than one?)

Hi-- I own 2 of the "standards" on the WF's:
"The Expert's Book" by Paul W. Schmid and
"Washington Franklin 1908-1921" by Martin A. Armstrong

You can find both on ebay, I think that the soft cover Armstrong book would cost you less, and in my opinion is the best.

I've read the Armstrong book from cover to cover, and instead of being a technically-written reference, it reads like a story, and makes it easier to understand how all of the varieties came about and why, and I think anyone could read and understand it.

The Schmid book, I have in hard cover, and it's tall, hard to fit on a shelf, but the pictures are much larger also.

Hope this is helpful-- Good luck, Ray

I use JohI's,"The United Postage Stamps of the 20th Century, Volume I-Revised". I think Johl, combined with "Washington Franklin 1908-1921" - SECOND EDITION (Black Cover) by Martin A. Armstrong.

If you are interested in "just" identifying these stamps, then the standard guide for identification purposes is The Micarelli Identification Guide to US Stamps.

Perhaps the finest piece of philatelic research on the Washington Franklins is Donald Lybarger's "The United States Issues of 1918-20". I believe this may be obtained as a free download from the APRL.
