OK, I'll admit it, I95 has really got me curious now about this blue Jefferson Davis that I got with a bunch of CSA forgeries and facsimilies. Not wanting to steer that thread in the wrong direction, I thought I'd post it here by itself and ask our experts opinions.
I've been comparing it to the image in Scotts Specialized Catalogue and with images on the expert sites, but at this stage I can convince myself of anything.
So have a closeup look, experts. What do you think?
Stampvirgin, I know you'll have an opinion.

For the record, the paper is quite thin but does appear to be a cotton rag. I'd say that having looked at it with a loupe and could see no wood fibres. There were a couple of small blue threads.

The stamp, unfortunately has a small thin at the top and a diagonal crease, but you can't see them from the front.

Weeeeeeellll?

I picked this one out of ebay for comparison.

The broken and uneven lettering on the OP's stamp suggest to me that it's a counterfeit.

Jinkies! This has become quite the question. I was hesitant to bother him, but I think I'll have to consult Dr. Kimbrough.
Stand by.

Well, that was incredibly fast. Dr. Kimbrough has responded.

"The stamp in the scan is a genuine CSA #4 and plates as Stone 2 Position 17."

Thanks I95, and everyone else for your responses and opinions.

Best 11˘ (plus postage) I ever spent.

Good score James! Way to go! I'm saying that there is still lots of mis and wrongly identified stuff out there if you just know what to look for!

Many thanks for the vote of confidence, Jeff. But I'm afraid the real culprit here is called 'luck'.
I just happened to be buying two dozen obvious forgeries and facsimiles and thought that one looked odd for some reason, so it must be a good one to grab.
Who knew the reason it looked odd was because it was the real thing?

My only hope is that this experience does add to my 'expertise' and I can choose, next time, with knowledge.
But I will take the luck when it comes.

Oh, and speaking of mis and wrongly identified stuff, looking this evening at CSAs I saw a few from a well known dealer, which were VERY expensive, and I think, even to my novice eye, misidentified, and one pretty obviously a forgery.

He's been discussed on this forum before, and is not well liked, so I don't think I need to warn any of you about it. You won't be going there anyway.

No worries Daryl. I appreciate yours and Doug's response to the query. If I hadn't valued the opinion of members here, I wouldn't have asked.
