Looking in the catalog the regular 70 is red lilac which Is definatly more red than this example. However I'm not sure if this falls into the violet range or if it goes all the way into the following issues and its not a 70 at all. Thanks for opinions.

It certainly appears violet and quite on the heavy side too.

Scott lists these colors for a 78

78 - lilac to dark lilac
78a - grayish lilac
78b - gray
78c - blackish violet
78d - Don't have to worry about this one

So the question now becomes Violet or Lilac ?

I would hazard a guess of 78c - blackish violet. The reason is that it appears to more of a reddish hue than a blueish hue of the lilacs.

I would definitely spend a few bucks to find out on that one. I saw it earlier but I was on my laptop and now looking at it on my home monitor it really does have a Purple tone.

I know most of it depends on the scanner but my Monitor died yesterday so I had to run out last night and replace it and I replaced it with a 27" LED monitor and now the color really jumps out.

These are very hard to distinguish. So hard I don't bother, but send them out to Bill W.

These 'color' changelings are tough.. I couldn't or wouldn't even hazard a guess.

I lost out so can't continue guessing now- If I had even a remote thought of violet black I'd have upped the bid on a chance.

I gave up on this stamp long ago. I bought the two different Scott numbers, mounted them in my album and never looked back.

the guy that had it listed originally had a hefty buy it now price then dropped it to a 99c start . Went for far less than original but would have needed a cert regardless. I have a few of this series in rough shape and one looks almost 2 tone with a greyish center and violet/ lilac edges. Far right stamp.

Nice stuff I.D.'d or not! This design (Scott's design designation of A29) has long been a favorite of mine. Thank you for the scans.

Check this one out-
