Hi,
I recently bought a selection of 19th century US stamps - all w/o identification. I have 3 of the 187/188 10 cent browns. The 187 is "without secret mark", the 188 is "with secret mark". What is the "secrect mark"?

I've looked thru the Scott 2012 specialized catalogue and cannot find a clue........ Can you help?

On this stamp the secret mark is the small semi-circle inside the scroll at the upper right hand corner.

Compare this to the one without the secret mark.
