Scott 1053 Plate Scratch

I noticed this line going from Hamilton's right cheek to the upper left corner. Is this a plate scratch ? Scott does not list any varieties for this stamp.



It's the upper left Stamp in this block and the only Stamp that shows it.

I checked, it is also not listed in the "Encyclopedia of Plate Varieties on U.S. Bureau-Printed Postage Stamps" by Loran C. French, published in 1979 by the Bur4eau Issues Association.

Perhaps a wipe mark from the polishing operation. These were quite common on flat plate.

If it is a scratch it will repeat on other examples from the same position. Since it is clear exactly which position this is, it should be easy to prove or disprove as a scratch.

Well I've scoured the internet and looked at a whole bunch of blocks with the same position and can't find another like it.
So what did I learn ? That I own the only copy of this now probably worthy of the Smithsonian and probably my retirement :)

Ok, back to reality, at least it might make a good curiosity.
