May I stray a bit off topic and ask how you recognize of a stamp has been re-perfed?

Quote:
yeah, id like to know why as well.

Sorry too to stray off topic, but just trying to help here.

I can't remember where I put this before, so here it is. It is of some help.

Notice on the closeup on the left bottom that perfs are slightly oval due to the perfs being made by a wheel of male pins which crimped one edge of the hole and tore off the edge directly across from it as it rolled along. This necessitated separate passes for vertical and horizontal perfs. This method is "line" perforation and continued until 1980.

Another telltale sign is that the perfs might not line up.

Sorry sinclair...I was working on this post while you were posting yours. Didn't mean to duplicate.

well, I guess it doesn't matter in my case, I put in a best offer using a friends account, and the guy accepted it, and my friend felt obligated to buy it. I though it was my account I was bidding on with it.

So RAHStamps gets a new sucker, and I of course will write heavily about them in the negative department on my own web forums, one I set up specifically for this kind of thin.

Maybe the seller didn't know it was reperforated. Not everyone can spot them like Sinclair and I'm sure he'll testify as to how many he's had to look at to get the knowledge he has today.

The biggest question with a stamp like this is "is the grill genuine". There is no way to tell positively from this scan.

The two vertical sides do not match up, so one at least one side has been reperfed. The left side does not match up with any of the other three sides, so that is the side that seems likely.

Thanks IBFS.

So, with a single stamp as it was in this case, the left perfs are not exactly opposite the right perfs and thus this means that it is reperfed?

The perfs on opposite sides of a stamp must be parallel. I don't see how it's possible for the pin roller that makes the perfs to not make opposite sides parallel.

I think Sinclair and revcollector have it nailed.

The perf holes don't need to be opposite each other. In fact that would be quite unusual.

Daryl, I have never dealt with RAH Stamps but I don't see this as a reason to throw them under the bus. Probably the vast majority of ebay "dealers" posses no more knowledge than an intermediate collector. I do think he should take the stamp back if you or your friend wants to return it though.

Rev, I think the top half of the left side looks different because they may be the only unaltered perfs on the entire stamp.

This gauges a perfect 12 on my specialists gauge.
I will post a scanned image in a bit.

Okay, I used ezperf to check out a scanned image, it comes out as 12 X12.5.

I did the srail test, left and right side perfs align perfectly and top and bottom align correctly.

I am not convinced any re-perfing has been done.

If you think the left and right sides align perfectly you must be using a different scan than the one that started this thread, because they sure don't line up for me and I did it three different times.
