For the first time, I have seen a Scott number associated with the pane of 20 cut from the press sheet of 120 = #4697a.

Can anyone verify this number? Or did an ebay seller just make it up for convenience?

I think it is wrong to suggest it is any different from the Scott number assigned to a single pane one could purchase OTC at the post office.

The Scott Numbers announced for 2012 issues suggest that Scott 4694-4697 are Williams, Doby, Stargell and DiMaggio (in that order). Scott 4697a (small "a") represents a "block or horizontal strip" of 4 stamps representative of Scott 4694-4697.

What the seller may be doing is identifying 4697a as the correct Scott number for the four players (as opposed to the single player varieties). Whether the item is identifying a strip, a pane, or a press sheet, Scott 4697a would still be the correct Scott number.

I have to agree. Since Scott refuses to give the imperfs unique Scott numbers, 4697a is probably the closest you're going to get until Michel or SG gives them a number.
