Repeating... you must have a Scott catalog if you want to collect US stamps beyond just a casual level. Read the section on grading - many times over. Grading and condition are the foundations. When you start looking at "value" you need to bear in mind that a stamp with the minimum CV (currently $0.25) is actually without value. Stamps under $1.00 can be easily found in dime or quarter books. Even sound stamps in the $1-10 range can be found at much lower selling points.
