Hello,

I've recently come into posession of my grandfathers stamp collection. I was going through it and was curious as to its value. For example, I have numerous first day of issue sets from the Famous Americans Series, circa 1940.

Aproximately what would one of those 1st day of issues be worth?

Thanks :-)

Welcome to the stamp community aliasneo07!

The value will depend on the condition of the FDCs and the maker of the cachet (picture) on the left hand side of the envelopes.
Often the cachet maker will include their name in the design in small print. Common cachets are Artcraft and Artmaster.
Less common cachets can command a premium. There is also a premium for unaddressed FDCs, but yours from 1940 are most likely addressed.

Can you post some pictures?

The portrait on the left looks like its in wonderful condition. all of these have been wrapped in plastic, I took a plastic cover off of this one to show you. It had 5 of these envelopes in them...all the envelopes were empty, but I don't know if thats normal. And I don't know what you mean by "unaddressed" but might these be unaddressed?

Thanks.

First Day covers for Famous American stamps range in Scott catalog value from $3-$10.
Yours are in excellent pristine condition and look essentially unaddressed which confers a premium.
Some have what look like pencil notations in the lower right corners which should not detract or could be easily removed.
The cachets are Artcraft, which are attractive and popular but also the most common.

Blocks of 4 on FDCs are worth about 1.5x the value for singles.
Remember however that stamps and covers usually sell at a substantial discount from catalog.
Some may sell for about 1/3 catalog.

For a very rough estimate, figure an average of about $2-3 retail per cover times the number of covers you have.
That is likely the maximum you could get for them, selling them yourself to collectors.
Most collectors on ebay are looking for deals and they might sell for less.
Remember a dealer will not pay you retail price.

Hope this helps.

to the SCF! I hope you decide to keep they and start a collection for yourself. You have a really good start with FDC's.

Hang out awhile and you might just get the bug!
