Cool, I go out of my way to find what I call stamp plus. It started with just singles and selvage but quickly expanded in to any stamp with selvage or another stamp attached in a canceled form.
This part of the collection has grown to include any type of connected stamps. I have a lot of blocks and strips. I just think it adds to the stamp when it is in used condition. Another nice factor is that you are able to get complete cancellations.
I collect only singles because of the scope of my worldwide collection If I ever come across blocks I'll start posting them to so that someone can enjoy them.
I too, collect united States cancels; mostly Texas or airmail cancels on air mail stamps.
Those cancels are called "rubber oval cancels" by the USPS. They are primarily used on parcels or registered letters. Most are blank ovals, no city nor state. Larger centres had a city and state.
You will notice there is no date in these cancels. That is because United States postal regulations require "blind" postmarks on the front of registered letters, and the back (where the flap is sealed to the envelope) cancelled with a proper dates, city and state AT EACH POST OFFICE THAT HANDLED THE LETTER. This was to avoid tampering with the contents, and could show the route the letter took.
Nice to see those cancels, Dan. Thank-you for sharing.
I have a copy of Grossman's PARAMOUNT STAMP ALBUM from 1950. It includes pages for blocks of four of U.S. issues beginning with the Grandma Moses 1934 commemoratives to include the prexies, famous Americans, flags of overrun nations, and even blank pages laid out for blocks for stamps that followed the GAR issue. Don't know if the Scott Modern Album of the day, which was comparable to the Paramount, did this but at least one album publisher encouraged it.
