These things are freaks, alright. Notice the color shift, and compare the facial features of James Monroe and James Garfield to any other copy of Scott 810 or 825 you can find. Monroe bears a strange resemblance to Jefferson, and Garfield to Taft! These came from an old collection I had as a kid and were NOT Photoshopped.

I don't know why but of all the stamps I have this series has the most color shifts. I suspect it is the quality of the ink. When you combine this with extra light the green, blues and pinks will fade faster than other stamps. While I have examples of fading through out the series the above colors are the worst for fading.
It looks like your stamps might of been below some paper with holes punched in them. I did look through mine and I did not have any with the same small color shift.Instead the entire stamp color shifted. |

I hate to burst the bubble on this but it is not a color shift or any other kind of naturally occuring item. it is manipulation after the printing process. If you look below you can see that on the 5 cent the hole has been punched out and replaced with the face from the 1 cent. on the 20 cent they used the face from the 50 cent. Not a freak, not and error, deliberate manipulation. I am not saying that it was done by the current owner but it was done by someone. Modern-who mentions it in the first post but some seem to think otherwise. Richard |

Quote: they look like someone had fun with a hole punch and some glue! Bingo, Ziggy! You had it right, right from the start. I thought it was obvious, and even said "These things are freaks, alright." They're Frankensteins! I did these as a kid, playing with a hole punch. No glue, however, since the pieces fit in pretty snugly and mounting with a stamp hinge made sure they stayed in place. I found a little approval size booklet with this sort of thing in some old stuff I brought home from my parent's attic and put a couple of them up for fun. Also had some QEII and some more complex piece assemblies using elements besides faces. |

It is very convincing! The only thing to give it away is the interruption of the cancel. |
