It's not a dumb question at all Gussy! I have a very vague recollection that Farley was Postmaster General or in some position of influence that he caused certain US stamps to be produced. One of the US guys or gals will know more.

Here is an example of a Farley's Lot on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/United-States-F...ve_W0QQitemZ a href= /go/link.asp?target=https://www.ebay.com/itm/-/150285318884 target= _blank rel= nofollow 150285318884 /a QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20080820?IMSfp=TL0808201737r31870

James A Farley was PMG in the Roosevelt Admionistration. He was also a key support of Roosevelt and his stamp collecting hobby.

In the mid-1930's, PMG Farley had ungummed, imperf copies of some of the current stamps printed and he gave them to close friends and supporters. When the philatelic community learned of this, the "you-know-what" hit the fan.

Therefore, they were printed in greater quantities and sold to collectors. They are called "Farley's Follies", to-day, and they have Scott numbers, were used for postage, etc.

Hope this helps!

David

It should be fair to say Farley was not a stamp collector however his boss was. So to keep in close with FDR he would let the President design stamps and in addition started to give him special printings.

He was giving the President and a few others full uncut and imperforated sheets of new stamp issues prior to release.

After the stamp world found out about these special issues stamps Farley re-issued all of the uncut, imperforate sheets (mostly representing the National Parks issue of 1943) to the general public.

These unusual issues became known as "Farley's Follies"

Here is a brief look at mine.

Here are two of my favorite ones, note they did produce a couple of stamps with perforations. In addition they were all ungummed but later you could return them to the PO and they would place gum on them if you wanted.

This is a Farley ungummed imperforate plate block of the Wisconsin Tercentenary Issue.

It shows Jean Nicolet's landing on the shores of Green Bay.
