this embossed envelope has an invitation to a party and was sent from Beloit Wisconsin to Ohio and was 10 cents, don't know why the rate would be so high. The envelope is 3.5" x 2". |

This one has a vivid blue cancellation and a wonderful 10 cent in roman numeral. |

I'm delighted to see that there are still collections out there waiting to be discovered. Your family has a real treasure in this collection, and it would be the envy of even the most advanced collector. Thank you for showing it to us, and welcome to SCF!

Chic, the collection you have posted so far would make wonderful exhibits at a show if you ever think about exhibiting. Oh yeah, not a bad way to jump in the forum either, keep em coming. |

The same Philemon Ewing? Quote: Very few war-date William Tecumseh Sherman letters of such important content have ever appeared at auction. In 1990, a three-page March 1864 letter to Gen. R.M. Sawyer giving orders to pursue Gen. N.B. Forrest after the Fort Pillow massacre sold at Christie's for $27,500. In May 1992, a three-page March 1863 letter to Gen. S.A. Hurlbut about Grant's orders for maneuvers around Vicksburg sold at Christie's for $33,000. In November 1992, an eight-page May 1862 letter to his stepbrother Philemon Ewing about the poor performance of an Ohio regiment during the Battle of Shiloh sold at Christie's for $49,500. This would explain the Notre Dame connection: Quote: Philemon Beecher Ewing of Lancaster, Ohio, an Ohio Supreme Court judge, was Thomas Ewing's son. John G. Ewing, professor at the University of Notre Dame and lawyer, was his grandson. |

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here's something totally different, A censor passed letter from my great uncle to my great-great gandmother from France 5 months before the end of World War One --------------------------------------------------------------------------- I realy enjoy collecting from the WWI and WWII era. Love the cover you had at the end of WWI. And it is probably my twisted mind but did anyone notice the address was Adolph Ave. I know a different spelling but just guess it's the way I think. Foreshadowing of the future??? Thank you so much for showing the covers I have really enjoyed looking at them all. |
