James W Denver came back to the Indian affairs department in 1858 and 1859
Here is a little Bio on James W Denver
After the discovery of gold in 1849, Denver lead a wagon train of 34 people to California along the Oregon Trail. Unsuccessful in prospecting for gold, politics proved to be his golden opportunity when California became the 31st state on September 5, 1850. In 1851, James Denver was elected to the California State Senate. In 1853, he was appointed California Secretary of State and elected Representative to the U.S. Congress.
President James Buchanan appointed Denver U.S. Commissioner of Indian Affairs in April of 1857. In late December of 1857, Buchanan reassigned Denver as Acting Governor of the Kansas Territory. This was a volatile time during Kansas' History because of the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. This act required that citizens of new territories vote for pro-slave or free status. In 1858, he was made the official Governor of the Territory. During this time, Colorado was part of the Kansas Territory. The city of Denver, Colorado was named in his honor.
In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln appointed Denver to Union Brigadier General of Volunteers. After the Civil War, Denver relocated to Washington D.C where he practiced law until his death.
