Hello All,

I have just stumbled across this forum!

I am trying to catalogue some stamps I recently inherited. I am making slow, steady progress!

I have one Swiss stamp that I cannot identify:

It has a white background with a red rectangle, within the red rectangle is a plain red cross and above that is what appears to be a bi-plane with some faint clouds.

There are no numerals/value on it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Simon

This may not be a Swiss stamp. They usually have a white cross on a red background. Maybe it is something to do with the Red Cross.

I took a quick look and couldn't find this one in the scott's catalogue under Switzerland. Someone else should be along with other thoughts.

Thanks for the replies. The only reason I thought it was Swiss was because it appeared on this page of an album:

I'd have to agree with Triggersmob; it has something to do with the Red Cross, for sure. I doubt it's the Swiss Red Cross, though. It's 1920s vintage, I believe, because the airplane has no markings (if it was WWI related, it probably would have) and it appears that it has floats and not wheels.

The postmark looks like it could be Canadian (dual rings, and an A ending the word on the bottom -- "CanadA"?). We had biplanes that were used in the bush with floats (check out early flight covers), and yes, it is well known that such planes were used as "air ambulances" and for medical reasons.

It's more a seal than a stamp, but it's one I don't recall ever seeing.

It isn't a stamp but probably a charity seal of unknown origin (to me).
It's on that page because someone mistook it as a Swiss stamp. Stamps
almost always have a denomination or value, and except for stamps from
Great Britain, almost always show the country of origin.
