I have been scanning my album into Stamp Manage 2012. When I got to this I had a hard time deciding on the color. I scanned this in @ 600 dpi. There is still paper on the back but it seems intact. There is a disturbance along the bottuom.

Anyone able to Name this color. My eyes are gettin dim, but it looks closer to deep violet.

I'm no specialist in this particular issue, but according to the Scott Specialized stamp catalog there is no "deep violet" color shade known for this stamp. The choices are violet (most common), deep red violet (very rare), light reddish violet and red violet.

Although monitors can be deceptive is accurately identifying color, I don't see where the above scan is anything but violet. If it were any of the red violet varieties, the color would be much more distinctive.

This commentary might interest you, where they suggest that even some subtle changes in storage and/or chemical treatment can create the appearance of the rare color variety:

On the other hand, Siegel does refer to a "deep violet" color rather than a "deep red violet" color in describing the "rare" 537a. I'm not sure why they vary from what is stated in the Scott Catalog, but all sources seem to agree the only way to really tell is to get the stamp expertized -- yet even the experts can't always agree.

I'm with wt1 on this one. It may be a well inked one that shows detail strongly but it still looks like its violet.

Excellent. thanks a bunch!
I didn't think I saw any red tones in the original, But it didn't match the other examples. And books dont always tell us everything. :) Especially if its the software kind.

Can anyone with a recent Scott catalog tell me what the 537a in mint previously hinged condition lists at? I have a 2004 catalog that lists it at $1250 but that was 9 years ago.

Matt

My 2012 catalog still shows $1250 in unused condition. Same for 2011. Incidentally, the SCV notes that the stamp value is based on a graded condition of F (not VF).

Just as a point of reference, I have an old 2002 Scott Catalog that shows the same stamp valued at $1400. So the value of the item actually declined about 10.7% over the past decade.
