Quick query- how is one supposed to tell the difference between these two sets? My understanding is that 766-7 were issued without gum. Unless one has 766-7 with part of another sheet attached you can't tell? Is this correct?

Many album publishers provide for both sets but it seems like a crap shoot to decide which go where- I had a set for years I assumed were 730-1 then noted both had no gum so now assume they are 766-7.

Thanks for the link- I know the story about the Farleys. I am still wondering- would the only difference in these sheets be the lack of gum on 766-7?

Has to do with the spacing between the selvage writing and the stamps if I'm not mistaken? Ones wider than the other I believe?

not a difference with the spacing
not a difference with the gum

The 766&767 were SOLD as full sheets of 9 panes [225 stamps] - so pairs of stamps with the full inter-pane margins are possible. 730&731 were only sold as individual souvenier sheets of 25 stamps.
Theortically and practically, individual stamps from 766&767 [and the other Farley gutter items] can only be identified when kept as pairs or larger pieces. Most albums have larger spaces for these.

This link may have already been posted somewhere. Sorry if it was. I was too lazy to go thru all the history here. But if it wasn't, hope it helps.
