Is there anyone in the community that either has or knows someone who has a U.S. #409 W-F Covel/Filstrup private perf. either on or off cover that has been certified? Or, even one on cover that isn't certified? I have, I think, one off cover that I received a "No Opinion" on when I sent it in because of a lack of "definitive evidence" to make a determination. Therefore, I'm looking to see if anyone else may have one. There are supposed to be #409 Flistrup/Covel private perfs. known on Covel Manuf. Co. covers. They were perf'ed 11.75 vertical on the Rosback Perforating Machine(12-67 on the Kiusalas gauge)from 409 sheets.
Thanks!
Dave

I can't help much, but it might be of interest to checkout Lot 789 (page 60) at this link where a Scott 408 is shown with the private perfs you describe:

Thanks wt1, I have a local collector I know who has either #408 or #481 on Covel covers. I really would like to find some collectors with #409 to help me get recognition on the one I think I have. There probably aren't too many out there. If you subscribe or can get a copy of the March 2013 issue of The American Stamp Dealer & Collector magazine there is a pretty good article on them. Although I don't have a 2013 copy of the Scott Specialized, I believe they have finally got some recognition in the private perf.s section for these.

Thanks Again
Dave

Yes they have been included in Scott 2013, but 409 is not listed as a known variety. Hence their reluctance to certify a used single.

Any sign of a Benton Harbor postmark on your stamp ?

No, its very lightly cancelled with just traces of cancelling black ink in places across the stamp. I doubt I can get it certified as such without finding other examples, especially examples on cover, as alluded to in the magazine article. I e-mailed the editor to see if they could put me in touch with the author. Perhaps, If that happens, I can see where he got the information that 409's on Covel cover(s) exist. I just thought I'd see if anyone using this forum might have additional information I could follow up on.
Thanks!
Dave

Interestingly Kiusalas 12-67 was used on several revenue stamps starting in 1914 and until 1958. It appears to be the only stroke perforator used by the BEP before the 1960's.
