I saw a reference in a previous thread to a simple, single-line precancel. Is that what I have here on some singles that I purchased from USPS? (Look kind of silly to me.)
I think some kind of roller cancel. Can't imagine they are any kind of precancel, with no city or state expressed. You sometimes see cancels like this on stamps removed from first day covers.
Yes, I have seen the same, but these were as purchased from the Post Office and still on the adhesive backing paper. I have the entire set of (5) that were all purchased at the same time. Odd.
Something is wrong. This stamp is not a self-adhesive, but has water-activated gum. I've never heard of USPS selling single stamps on trimmed paper.
I agree with doug2222 -- the line is the normal position of the top line of a standard cancel for FDC singles. If you google FDCs for these stamps (the singles, not the strips), you will see the similarity. It basically looks like used stamps cut from FDCs.
Don't know when you purchased these stamps; they were issued 14 years ago. If for some reason you bought them very recently, I would ask the clerk what they are selling because the stamps are not valid for postage.
