I have hundreds of Washington Franklins and I have never seen a Precancel on the 4˘. I'm assuming it's not all that scarce though.

Dalton, Massachusetts had several precancel varieties back in the day, although your example is so light it is hard to tell which variety you may have.

For the record, the W/F series had precancels on virtually every denomination, including the 4-cent varieties. Here are some examples from my collection of 4, 5, 6 and 7-cent W/F precancels:

As long as I pulled them out, here's a sampling of my Franklin 8-cent to 20-cent precancels also:

Although this is obviously from a later series of stamps, here's an example of what one of the Dalton, Mass. precancels should look like. This one is a Type 225:

This Dalton is the L-2 HS type. Oddly, the old catalogs list the 4c perf 12 as the commonest denomination.

I figured as much. I have seen most all the W/F's with precancels but for some reason had never seen one (That I can remember) on the 4˘).
Thanks, for the replies WT1 & Chasa.

Here are some on old postage dues:

The items I am missing are the style shown in WT1's post. This album page was created using the database associated with the 1940 Hoover catalog. Oddly, the 2 items I am missing are in the catalog and the 5 that I own are unlisted. Heavy duty work in being done right now by the Precancel Stamp Society to bring the Hoover data into the 21th century with all the new findings included.

Without regard to denomination, it appears there are only two unlisted Dalton, MA precancels shown...is that right?

For those who may not know, Dalton is a very small Berkshire County community whose primary "claim to fame" is being the home of Crane Paper Co., who manufactures the paper used in all US currency.
