Hey folks.

Ive been looking through a 100 or so covers with this stamp, and a few of his cousins. The stamp on the left caught my eye. Is it just a wiper blade flaw, or is it the cracked plate?

If I look in the white margin below the bottom of the design, there appears to be some cracking. The top stamp looks to have traces of a line as well.

Thanks for any help.

I believe what you are seeing is actually part of the cancellation.

edit: I see it now and just a wiper streak from cleaning the printing plates. I believe some call them gripper cracks which is sort of a misnomer.

I don't think its part of the cancellation. Here is a scan of just the 1 stamp. At a better resolution.

It looks like a kind of 'doctor blade' variety to me, but, I am not an expert on US stamps.

This is by no means a "gripper crack". It is also not a plate crack with any other name! Too bad you did not scan the whole stamp, I see more of these scratches in the bottom margin.
They do indeed look more like a doctor blade, and there seems to be a slight hint of a continuation on the top stamp, just above the "n" of "Franklin".
Do you know the name of the press these were printed on?
