I think it may be counterfeit grill. I have heard of irregular shaped grills as a result of several sheets being fed into the grilling apparatus at the same time, but the impression looks strong which goes against the incomplete shape. More important for me is the shape and spacing of the points as viewed from the front of the stamp. They look way off from genuine grills... Circular rather than boxed and saved quite far apart point to point. Just my opinion.

Stamp does appear to be the National Bank Note Co printing so that is correct (Scott 147).

This appears to me to be a partial impression of a late state I-grill with its characteristic truncated pyramids. I count 11 columns across, which is consistent with the 11x13 dimension of the I-grill. Unfortunately, given a partial strike, the absence of additional rows or columns does not preclude an H-grill, but the impression characteristics and shape of the pyramids are not consistent with an H-grill IMO.

So, what I think you have is the real deal, and if you are ever unhappy with it, let me know and we can see what we can do to make you happy.

That's great - thanks for the info. Sorry though, it's a keeper and will be the first stamp to ever grace my grilled banknote album page.
