Scott 751 With Brookline, Mass. "Fancy Cancel"?

I saw this listing on ebay and was taken back by the Brookline, Mass. cancel that has the town name in a sort of banner with some fancy artwork around it:

The seller suggests it's a "fancy cancel" but it seems a bit late (1935) for that to be the appropriate term. Further, it appears to be not just a conventional handstamp postmark, but the typical purple stamp that it commonly used by clerks at post office windows.

Does anyone have any additional information on this postmark? I can't say that I recall seeing anything similar. For convenience, I enlarged the postmark and reoriented it for easier viewing:

I don't think a cancel of that design (and font) was ever used on a day-to-day basis by the Post Office; on the other hand, it seems too early for a Private Mailer's handstamp. Nice item!
