I have discovered my first grilled stamp. As it is my first, the Scott Catalog is not so descriptive on them or is it over descriptive? Also the Internet seems to compound the issue with up/down vertical and horizontal points. Then it turns into color issues. Where could I find information to research further grills if I happen on to one any links would be appreciated. My rough guess is 15 points wide and 20 /21points high poking down from the back of the stamp toward the front in a pyramid shape. I am just describing what it looks like to me. I may be off completely as I said this is my first grill thanks. It looks like in contrast the lines are vertical not horizontal?
I would say it is a #94 (based on the scan). A good reference book would be The Nineteenth Century Postage Stamps Of The United States Vol. I-III by Lester Brookman. My set is the old two-volume printing signed by Lester Brookman himself.
Try these sites: www.1847usa.com and www.jamesdire.net/grill.html and www.siegelauctions.com. In Seiegels site, go to tools/resources then in the drop down box, to Seigel encyclopedia, then scroll down to 1867-68 grill issues and click on the picture. Hope these help. Based on scan and color of the stamp its either and "E" or "F" grill in my opinion.
