I just purchased this stamp that was advertised as having a green cancellation. The final price was not indicative of typical 114s with green cancellations (even for flawed stamps, like this one). I'm colorblind, so rely heavily on sellers to get things correct. Is this cancel green? Brian

29 views and no takers? This was a serious question! I trust that not all of you suffer from the same ailment as I?!? |

Looks like a Cincinnati datestamp. I haven't heard of Cincinnati using green for it's datestamps. Looks blue or blue/green (more common) to me. C.

Searched through Siegel past sales for a green Cincinnati. There isn't one. There is a lot listed as: 3c Ultramarine (114). Tied by perfect strike of greenish-blue target, matching "Cincinnati O. May 7" circular datestamp on Anchor Life Insurance Co. illustrated allegorical advertising cover in blue to Lebanon O., slightly reduced at right, stamp has minor toned spots, still pristine and Extremely Fine, ex Haas and Coulter. 2007, sale number 948, lot number 439 http://www.siegelauctions.com/2007/948/439.jpg |

On my monitor, it looks to have a lot of blue in it but perhaps some green tone too, so I guess what I'm seeing is a blue-green cancel. Other monitors may show a difference in the color? Without seeing the actual stamp, I'd say it isn't a true green cancel. I have a #11 with a green cancel and there isn't any trace of blue in the color. You could send a scan to Bill Weiss and get his opinion. |

I just checked my #114s on cover, I have one with a blue-green (heavier toward the blue color, just a hint of green) on a cover cancelled at Cincinnati, Ohio. Don't know if that really helps or not. I'd still sending asking Bill Weiss |

Thank you to all who responded and Great link, Chip!
I was actually more concerned about this being a non-contemporaneous usage, but that doesn't appear to be the case. At $15.50, I got a bargain imo. I can't wait for it to arrive!
I've had some great luck finding unusual 1869 pictorials this summer!

Some parts are green, some blue. Keep in mind that green is derived from mixing blue and yellow. |

I would call it teal- though I doubt such a colour exists in any official guide. |

The blue tints in the green cancel are caused by areas of the stamp's blue printing ink grinning through the translucent green ink of the cancel.

Quote: I definitely read "NCINNATTI" and "APR 2 07". There's no "07", it's the letter 'O' for "Ohio". You can see a good picture of the complete CDS on the Seigel link Chip provided. |

All but one certified stamp/cover that I have seen from Cincinnati of this era (non-black) are certified as blue/green, greenish blue, blue, etc. I have seen one certified as "green", but then in the description, is says GREENISH BLUE (PF 241425). I would say that this in not a true green (like an Owego), but a greenish-blue. |
